UPCOMING EVENT: Life in the Kimberley with Lisa and Aquinas
An exhibition of paintings and digital media by
Lisa Uhl and Aquinas Crowe

Exhibiting in Fitzroy Crossing – 12 to 18 October 2009
Exhibiting in Perth – 6 to 20 November 2009
Lisa Uhl (a painter) and Aquinas Crowe (a digital media artist and emerging filmmaker) are two young disabled aboriginal artists based in Fitzroy Crossing. They wish to invite members of the Western Australian community to their first joint art exhibition celebrating their unique and touching tales of life in Western Australia’s Kimberley region.

Lisa and Aquinas have been developing their art-making skills together in DADAA (Disability in the Arts, Disadvantage in the Arts, Australia) Inc workshops for over three years. In early 2009, the pair expressed a desire to take their art practice to a new level – and exhibit their work locally in Fitzroy Crossing, and tour it to galleries in Perth.

With support from DADAA Inc and Mangkaja Arts Resource Agency Aboriginal Corporation, Lisa and Aquinas received a grant from the Department of Culture and the Arts (in partnership with the Disability Services Commission) worth $21,560 to undertake their exhibitions in Fitzroy Crossing and Perth. In addition to the October/November 2009 exhibitions, funding has also been allocated towards a third exhibition featuring work by the pair in June 2010 at the Moores Building Contemporary Art Gallery in Fremantle.

Lisa and Aquinas are excited about the artistic opportunities and prospects that this project will create for them – and how it will strengthen and broaden the scope of their arts practice. Displaying the artwork at DADAA’s Freight Gallery and the Moores Building Contemporary Art Gallery will create greater exposure for their art and culture. Both are very enthusiastic about accompanying their work to Fremantle for both exhibitions, and meeting new people and having the opportunity to promote themselves and their community.

The exhibition will open in Fitzroy Crossing at 5:00pm on Tuesday 13 October 2009 at Mangkaja Arts Centre. The event will coincide with the launch of ‘Rough Copy. Not Finished Yet’ – Mangkaja Artist Stories, and will feature local traditional dance and bush tucker. The celebration in Fitzroy Crossing will be an inclusive community event, providing both Lisa and Aquinas an opportunity to display to their family and friends the progress they have made in their arts practice.
